Dennis Maher The Fargo House, Bridge Room, looking south, 2012. Photograph by Biff Henrich / IMG_INK. Maher bought a couple of houses that would have been demolished in the urban shrinkage of Buffalo.  He has made Fargo House into a massive artwork, excavating the structure of the house, revealing hidden aspects, and adding layer upon layer of evocative content.  He has worked in house demolition, and was struck by the amount of waste generated, and has been inventing ways to repurpose the materials to conceptual and poetic ends. Notice in this photo, how most of the floor has been removed.  Sculptures climb from the lower levels of the house, rising through gaps in the flooring, to the second floor.

Dennis Maher House of Collective Repair, 2012–13. Photograph by Biff Henrich / IMG_INK. I adored this project at the Albright-Knox gallery.  The installation fills an entire room with strangely ordered bricabrac — it looks like a garage storage unit gone mad.  All kind of building materials abound: lumber, moldings, carpet, shingles, plumbing, bricks.  The entire structure is thinking about a house, the meanings of renovation and disrepair, what it means to seek shelter. He collaborated with 8 tradespeople — drawing their expertise into the creation of the miniature homes that appear within the structure.  The trades include plumbing, masonry, windows and doors, insulation, roofing, painting, flooring, and electrical. Virgin and Child with Saints, circa 1472 by Netherlandish (Ghent) Painter (possibly Hugo van der Goes) In the early seventeenth century the paint layers on the figures of the Virgin and Child and Saint John the Baptist were scraped off and repainted with a representation of the Marriage of Henry VII and Elizabeth of York. The later additions were subsequently removed, revealing the meticulous preparatory underdrawing in brush and pen for the original figures that is typical of Netherlandish practice. The authorship of this extremely fine painting is uncertain, although it has been ascribed to both Hugo van der Goes and to Jean Hey.

baldingmen: John Koch, The Sculptor1964 Brooklyn Museum This is so layered. In the back, the sculpture shows Prometheus being punished for sharing the gods’ fire with mortals.  In the front, the classical nude model is lighting the cigarette of the exhausted, worn artist.

I have seen his work hung with different orientations.  There is a letting-go, on his part, which requires ongoing invention on the part of the installers.   His architectural projects have enormous power. Check out this video, about his project along the “High Line” in New York City.

El Anatsui. It is amazing to see the diversity of textures and surfaces that he creates from the simplest of materials.  The aluminum bottle cap and can - crushed, folded, bent, and linked together with copper wire - results in this wide array of visual possibilities.  Effects range from translucent veils to dense mosaics of rich colour. “I believe that artists are better off working with whatever their environment throws up. I think that’s what has been happening in Africa for a long time,” Anatsui said in a 2003 interview. “I believe that color is inherent in everything, and it’s possible to get color from around you, and that you’re better off picking something which relates to your circumstances and your environment than going to buy a ready-made color.” http://www.beachpackagingdesign.com/wp/2009/02/el-anatsui.html
